Community Garden

April 6, 2009

If you follow my Twitter feed, you know we were given a plot in our local community garden. This weekend was the mandatory first-meeting, where we were assigned our plot, met our neighbors and spent the rest of the day tilling, digging and sweating.

Our plot is in what Faye & I call “New Town”, the new garden area which is yet to be fenced-in. The “old town” was quick going for those gardeners, so we had extra hands to help us out in the afternoon carrying wood and spreading compost. Our little spot is located on former playground grass, so we spent the first hours digging up sod. A neighbor rented a roto-tiller and shared with the rest of us. Those things are hard to use! Once we dug deep enough (not being a grower, this was determined by watching our neighbors give up) we lined the 8′ x 10′ plot with cut tree trunks and filled it all in with wheelbarrows of compost. Faye played with the worms and we shared a frozen lemonade. We both felt muscles which we forgot we had - or maybe just me. {Thank you Aleve!}

Everyone was so friendly and helpful, it was a feel-good Saturday with our Providence neighbors.

I’ll post pictures throughout the summer! Now the fun part: What to plant!

  1. I wish we have a community Garden here in Perth Australia. I would love to have a plot like that to plant my vegetables.
