Newspaper Wood

October 24, 2008

Reader David emailed to let us know about Dutch designer Mieke Meijer. A graduate of the Design Academy in Eindhoven, Mieke has devised a clever way to re-use newsprint. Using a roller, sheets of old newspapers are wound together to create a “log” of paper/wood. Special glue is used to create a material which has similar characteristics to wood, while retaining its Newspaperness.

I like how the cuts across the “grain” look like tree rings. Wonder if they are structurally able to be used as building materials?
